An open sandbox is a sandbox on a timer. Leave it uncovered for a week in a typical backyard and you will find rainwater sitting in the bottom, a mat of wet leaves pressed into the sand, and a layer of grit that came from somewhere you would rather not name. A cover is what … Read more
Most backyard obstacle toys are built for five-year-olds. The swing seat tops out at 70 pounds, the wobble bridge is three feet long, and within a month the whole thing is folded up in a corner of the garage gathering dust. Older kids are a different problem. A 12-year-old wants real distance between obstacles, a … Read more
A climbing dome is a freestanding half-sphere climbing frame that sits directly on the ground, giving kids a lattice of angled bars to climb over instead of a slide or a swing set. Because it needs no deck, no posts and no digging, a dome fits backyard spaces where a full-size swing set never could. … Read more
A two-seat seesaw sounds like the simplest piece of backyard kit you can buy. Two kids, one board, one pivot, endless arguments about whose turn it is. If your tent floor sits 6 feet 6 inches or more above the ground — a lifted Silverado, a Sprinter, a Defender, a Tundra with a big rack — the factory ladder usually leaves … Read more

It is about the soggy sandwich that spent two days in a melt-water cooler because nobody wanted to buy another bag of ice at the last fuel stop. A compressor portable fridge ends that problem: plug it into your 12V outlet, set … Read more
Every one of the 12 models in this roundup is a compressor fridge/freezer that runs straight off 12V DC, needs no mains inverter, and cools from about 32F down to true freezer temperatures. The whole category has narrowed sharply in the last two years, and the choice now comes down to three questions: how much … Read more
